What to bring for opening day of deer season

A checklist for opening day: blaze orange, warmth, light, optics and game care, with links to each state's season dates and the orange rules we have noted.

Opening day goes better when you pack the night before. This list covers the non-weapon gear that most hunters want on a first day. It does not cover firearms, ammunition, bows, broadheads or knives, which we do not link to and which depend on your state’s rules and your own choices.

Know your dates and your rules

Season dates, bag limits and license fees differ by state. Our deer seasons by state page lists the ones we have verified, and each state has its own page:

Our guide to reading deer season dates explains how the season types and zones work. The separate question of which license, permit, or endorsement to buy is hunting license, deer permit, and tag.

Blaze orange: check the agency’s rule

On the pages we have noted it, orange is a requirement in certain seasons. Indiana requires hunter orange during the youth, firearms and muzzleloader seasons, and in reduction zones in a specific period. Ohio requires it during the youth gun, gun and muzzleloader deer seasons. Virginia’s blaze orange rules apply in firearms season and to muzzleloader hunters, with exceptions listed by the agency. The rules differ for archery and by weapon, and they change, so confirm on the agency page linked from your state’s page before you buy or hunt.

Disease rules

Some states have rules for testing or moving carcasses where chronic wasting disease has been found. Minnesota’s mandatory sampling and Virginia’s carcass transport rules are both noted on our state pages. Read them before opening day, not after.

Gear picks

The product links below go to Amazon. They are examples of each category, not rankings, and none of them is a substitute for the agency’s rules. Names are the listing titles; check the listing for size and what is included.

Blaze orange

Where blaze orange is required, you need to meet your state's exact rule for how much to wear and what counts. A vest is the simplest layer over what you already own, and a hat covers the other common requirement.

Warmth

Sitting still is colder than walking. Disposable warmers for hands and boots, and wool socks, are cheap additions that make a long sit easier.

Light and optics

Most opening days start and end in the dark, so a headlamp matters. A red-light mode is gentler on your night vision. Binoculars help you see what you are looking at, including other hunters.

After the harvest

Gloves keep your hands clean during field dressing, game bags protect meat from dirt and insects, and a drag harness or hoist makes moving a deer less punishing. Wipes help you clean up. A cooler with ice packs is useful on the ride home.
