Fishing license as a gift

Which state wildlife agencies sell a gift fishing license, gift voucher, or gift certificate, with the official page for each state we could verify.

Updated 2026-10-30Gear on this page

A fishing license is a gift only if the state agency will sell it that way. FishLimit does not sell licenses, and a card from this site is not one. The list below is the agencies whose own pages, read on Oct. 30, 2026, describe a gift license, a gift voucher, or a gift certificate that can be used for a fishing license. If a state is missing, we did not verify a page for it. Shipping dates for a physical gift are in Gifts for anglers and hunters 2026.

Prices below are the ones the agency printed on the page we cite. They are not a shopping recommendation.

States with a gift license or gift certificate

State What you can give What the agency says Official page
California Gift voucher Redeemable for a 365-day resident sport fishing license only. A gift voucher is not a valid license until it is redeemed. Guest checkout can buy vouchers. CDFW online sales
Colorado Gift certificate Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s license shop sells gift certificates and says they can be used for any purchase made online or in store. They are not redeemable for cash and are not refundable if lost or stolen. CPW gift certificates
Idaho Gift certificate Idaho Fish and Game’s Dec. 10, 2025 article says gift certificates are purchased at a regional office and redeemed at a Fish and Game office, including toward a 2026 hunting or fishing license. A resident license can be bought for a spouse, a child under 18, or yourself, because residency has to be confirmed. Idaho Fish and Game
Kansas Hunt / Fish / Trap / Boat gift card Electronic cards from Go Outdoors Kansas can pay for a Kansas fishing license or hunting license, among other items. They cannot be redeemed for cash and expire 60 months from the date of issue. Redeem at license.gooutdoorskansas.com with the card number and PIN. Older “Fish Hunt Camp KS” cards are for camping, not for these licenses, except through the Pratt office as that page describes. KDWP license gift cards
Kentucky Gift certificate Valid for 5 years. May be used for licenses and permits, and for several other Kentucky Fish and Wildlife charges. Issued as a printable code and redeemed online only at fw.ky.gov. The same gift page lists a resident Sportsman’s License at $95. KDFWR gift ideas
Minnesota Lifetime license, as a gift Not a gift card for an ordinary annual license. A lifetime hunting or fishing license can be bought for someone else. The first purchase is an application to the DNR License Center, not an online checkout. Processing is about three weeks, a Social Security number is required, and the license is not transferable. Fees depend on age and are printed on the lifetime page. Resident lifetime licenses
New Hampshire Gift certificate The Fish and Game license system says gift certificates for licenses are available at Fish and Game Headquarters in Concord. The same page says the sportsperson must apply for the license. NH Fish and Game license system
Ohio Wildlife gift certificate Any amount, valid one year from purchase, bought and redeemed only online in the HuntFish OH app or the Wildlife Licensing System. Recipients can use them for licenses, deer and turkey permits, and Ohio Wetland Habitat stamps. A 2025 Ohio DNR holiday note says the same thing: gift certificates are redeemable for online purchase of licenses and permits. ODNR gift certificates
Pennsylvania Gift voucher A voucher for a fishing license or permit, bought and redeemed at HuntFish.PA.gov or at an issuing agent. The Commission says a voucher is not a license, may not be used as a license while fishing, is non-refundable, and expires as noted on the voucher. PFBC gift vouchers
Vermont Gift certificate Redeemed online toward eligible hunting and fishing licenses. Transferable. At most two certificates on one purchase. Balances are not returned for cash except where the law requires it. Vermont Fish & Wildlife
West Virginia Gift certificate Usable for hunting and fishing licenses, stamps, and other privileges in the Electronic License System. Valid for five years. Digital, and both the purchase and the redemption are online. WVDNR gift certificates

Kentucky’s license page repeats the certificate rules: any amount, up to five years from purchase, redeemed only on the agency website, for licenses and permits among other charges. That page is fw.ky.gov licenses. Minnesota also describes the lifetime-license gift on its gifts page.

Gift cards that do not buy a fishing license

Two agencies sell a gift card that looks outdoorsy and then says it will not pay for a license.

Michigan. State park and harbor gift cards may be used for reservations, Recreation Passports, and some concession items. The Michigan DNR says they are not valid for hunting or fishing licenses or permits. Michigan DNR gift cards.

Minnesota state parks. The parks gift card is for camping, lodging, vehicle permits, and Nature Stores. The DNR says it is not valid for hunting, fishing, or other licenses. The lifetime license above is the separate product. State parks gift card.

The five states this site already covers

Ohio is in the table. Minnesota is in the table as a lifetime license, not as an annual-license gift card. For Texas, Indiana, and Virginia we did not find an agency page, on Oct. 30, 2026, that sells a gift certificate or gift voucher for a fishing license. We are not saying those states forbid it. We are saying we will not describe a product we have not read. Buy on the agency site linked from the state hub.

The annual prices we have checked for those five states are on the license fee ranking. A one-day license is often the cheaper gift for a visitor; the arithmetic is in short-term or annual nonresident licenses. Age cutoffs we have already published are in fishing with kids.

A redeemed license still has limits. Start at the state hub, then the species. Free days, where we have verified who qualifies, are on the free fishing days page and can make a license the wrong gift for that weekend.

Questions people ask

Does FishLimit sell a fishing license I can give?

No. FishLimit does not sell licenses. The states in the table sell a gift voucher, a gift certificate, or, in Minnesota, a lifetime license you can apply for as a gift. Each row links to that agency.

Is a gift voucher the same thing as a fishing license?

No, where the agency says so. Pennsylvania says a gift voucher is not a license and may not be used as a license while fishing. California says a gift voucher is not a valid license until it is redeemed. Redeem it on the agency site before anyone fishes.

Which states on this site sell a license gift certificate?

Of the five states with hubs here, Ohio sells wildlife gift certificates that can be redeemed for licenses, and Minnesota lets you apply for a lifetime hunting or fishing license as a gift. We did not find a gift-certificate page for Texas, Indiana, or Virginia. That is a limit of what we found, and the agency page is the place to confirm it.

Something to keep the license in

A gift certificate is not a license until the person redeems it. After they do, a license holder or a dry pouch is what keeps the document or the phone screen readable. These cards link to checked Amazon listings and do not show a price.
