What gear you need to fish for crappie

The light rod, small jigs, floats and measuring tools that suit crappie, with links to the daily limits and minimum lengths we track for each state.

Crappie are a good first species: they school up, bite readily, and do not need heavy gear. They are also among the species where the daily limit and minimum length vary a lot from one lake to the next.

Rules to check

Start with crappie limits by state. Then open your state:

If you are fishing a specific lake, look for an entry for that lake before relying on the statewide number. Our guide to bag, possession and size limits explains how to read what you find. When a statewide limit does not apply is the longer version of that warning, and how to measure a fish is the straight-line check before a short crappie goes in the cooler.

A simple first-day kit

A rod and reel, a spool of line, a small box of jigs and floats, a measuring tool, a hook remover and a cooler cover most of it. If it will be your first time fishing at all, the free fishing day checklist is a good companion.

A light rod, reel and line

Crappie have thin, papery mouths and are not huge, so light tackle is both more fun and kinder to the hook set. A light or ultralight spinning rod with a small reel and a thin monofilament line is the common setup.

Jigs and floats

Small jigs under a bobber are the classic crappie rig. A float lets you hold the jig at a chosen depth, and a handful of jig colours is enough to begin.

Handling and measuring

When crappie are biting you can lose count quickly. A hook remover speeds up unhooking, and a ruler on the boat or bank lets you check every fish against the minimum length.

Keeping fish fresh

If you are keeping a mess of crappie, ice matters. A cooler with ice packs on the way home is simpler than trying to keep fish alive on a stringer in hot weather.
