Do you need a trout stamp? TX, OH, MN, VA and IN compared

Which states make you buy a trout stamp or trout license on top of a fishing license, what it costs, when it applies and who is exempt, from agency sources.

Updated 2026-10-27Gear on this page

Of the five states we cover, Minnesota and Indiana make you add a trout/salmon stamp to your fishing license ($10 and $11), and Virginia makes you add a separate trout license, but only on designated stocked trout waters and only from Oct. 1 to June 15. Texas and Ohio list no trout stamp: the normal fishing license is what their license pages require. Prices and rules below were read on each agency’s site on Oct. 27, 2026.

The five states side by side

State Extra trout privilege? Price When or where it applies Who skips it
Minnesota Trout/salmon stamp validation $10 Designated trout streams and lakes, Lake Superior, and having trout in possession anywhere Under 18, 65 and older, 24-hour and 72-hour license holders, license-exempt anglers
Indiana Trout/salmon stamp $11, resident or nonresident Fishing for or taking trout or salmon in public water Under 18; included in the one-day and senior licenses; residents on free fishing days
Virginia Trout license (designated stocked trout waters) Resident $28; nonresident $48 on the DWR license page Stocked trout waters Oct. 1 – June 15; urban program waters Nov. 1 – Apr. 30; South Holston Reservoir Under 16; free fishing days (per the 2026 digest)
Texas None listed n/a A fishing license with the freshwater endorsement covers fresh water Nonresidents under 17 need no license
Ohio None listed n/a The standard Ohio fishing license Under 16 need no license

“None listed” means the agency’s own license table has no trout stamp or trout endorsement line. It does not mean trout are unregulated: Texas and Ohio both set daily trout limits, linked in the first column.

State by state

Minnesota. The $10 stamp is printed on your electronic license; that line is the only proof you need, and the DNR sells the actual picture stamp for 75 cents more if you want one. The trigger is broad: designated trout streams, designated trout lakes and Lake Superior all need it, and so does keeping a trout from any other lake. Trout received as a gift are the stated exception. Short-term 24-hour and 72-hour licenses do not need the stamp, which makes them the simple choice for a one-day trout trip.

Indiana. The stamp costs $11 whether you live in Indiana or not, and it runs on the same April 1 – March 31 year as the license. The guide says you need both a valid license and the stamp to fish for or take trout and salmon in public water. A one-day license ($10 resident, $15 nonresident) already includes the trout/salmon privilege, as do the senior annual and Senior Fish for Life licenses. On the state’s free fishing days residents need neither.

Virginia. Virginia’s version is a license, not a stamp, and it is tied to the water and the calendar. Designated stocked trout waters only count as such from Oct. 1 through June 15; outside that window you can fish them with your regular freshwater license. Urban program waters use a shorter window, Nov. 1 – April 30. Wild trout and many special regulation streams do not need the trout license, but some need a free landowner permit card, and most waters in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests need a National Forest stamp. The DWR license page lists the trout license at $28 for residents and $48 for nonresidents. The 2026 printed digest says the nonresident price was cut to the resident price, so the two documents disagree; check the price at checkout.

Texas. TPWD’s license page lists no trout stamp. What it does require is the right endorsement: a fishing license with a freshwater endorsement for fresh water, which the freshwater packages include. The Texas trout page has the daily limit.

Ohio. Ohio’s 2026-27 license table has no trout stamp, so a regular resident or nonresident fishing license covers trout. Lake Erie trout and salmon have their own dates and minimum length in the same booklet; see the Ohio trout page.

Before you go

  • Check the water, not just the state. Virginia’s rule depends on whether the stream is designated stocked water, and Minnesota’s on whether the water is designated trout water. Both agencies post those lists.
  • Short trips can be cheaper. In Indiana the one-day license includes trout; in Minnesota the 24- and 72-hour licenses skip the stamp. Our guide to short-term vs annual nonresident licenses and the license fee ranking have the base prices.
  • Free days. See free fishing days, explained and the free fishing days hub for verified dates.
  • Then read the limits. The trout comparison shows daily limits and seasons for all five states.

Questions people ask

Which of these states require a trout stamp?

Minnesota ($10 trout/salmon stamp validation) and Indiana ($11 trout/salmon stamp) do. Virginia sells a separate trout license for designated stocked trout waters, needed Oct. 1 through June 15. Texas and Ohio list no trout stamp in their fishing license tables; a regular fishing license (with the freshwater endorsement in Texas) is what their license pages call for.

Do kids need a trout stamp?

Not in these states' rules as we read them. Minnesota exempts anglers under 18, Indiana exempts residents and nonresidents under 18 from both the license and the stamp, and Virginia exempts residents and nonresidents under 16 from the fishing and trout license.

Do I need a trout stamp on a free fishing day?

Indiana says residents need neither a license nor the trout/salmon stamp on its free fishing days. Virginia's 2026 digest says the trout license is not needed on free fishing days, but fee fishing areas still require their daily permit.

Do I need a trout license in Virginia in summer?

No, not for designated stocked trout waters from June 16 through Sept. 30. Urban program waters only need it from Nov. 1 through April 30. You still need a regular freshwater fishing license, and South Holston Reservoir needs a trout license to fish for or keep trout.

Keeping the license and stamp together

In Minnesota and Indiana the trout privilege is printed on or tied to your fishing license, and Virginia's trout license is a separate document. A clear holder on a lanyard keeps the paperwork dry on a stream, where you are more likely to be wading than sitting in a boat.
